The following cases were completed in the Knox County court from July 23 through July 30.

Robert Gardner, 60, of Rockland, was sentenced July 30 by Justice Jeffrey Hjelm to five years in prison with all but four months suspended for two counts of possession of sexually explicit materials of minors younger than 12. Gardner will then be on probation for six years.

Two counts of dissemination of the materials were dismissed in return for the guilty pleas to the possession charges.

Gardner is a former local law enforcement officer.

Justice Hjelm said the crimes are horrific and that every time someone views or share such materials, the child is brutalized again. He said the victims have a lifetime sentence.

The judge said he was hesitant to accept the agreement recommended by the Maine Attorney General’s Office and the defense, but agreed because of several factors. Gardner immediately cooperated with police when they raided his home with a search warrant July 21, 2020, in Rockland. In addition, Gardner suffers from multiple physical and mental health problems.

There were 59 images or videos on his devices including torture of young children.

Hjelm warned Gardner that he faces an additional four years and eight months in prison if he violates probation upon his release from jail. During probation, Gardner is barred from using any device that can access the internet and from being in contact with anyone younger than 18. The exception to those conditions are that if the contact or use of an electronic device are part of a job.

Assistant AG Paul Rucha was the prosecutor. Gardner was represented by attorney William Maddox.
