SOUTH THOMASTON —m The South Thomaston Selectboard set the tax rate to cover the 18-month budget approved by voters June 15.

The tax rate was set at $23.55 at the July 21 Selectboard meeting. This compares to the prior rate set last year of $15.35.

Board member John Spear said $23.55 sounds like an outrageous rate but it was basically the same as the $15.35 but because the new rate will cover half more a stretch than the previous 12-month one. The money collected from this tax rate will cover a period of Jan. 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.

Once that is complete, the town will have 12-month budgets (July 1 through June 30) that will coincide with the school district and state.

Previously, the town has operated on a calendar year budget.

Property tax bills are expected to be mailed out to property owners during the first week of August. The first half payment for this 18-month budget will be due Oct. 1 and the second half April 1. Interest of 6% will be charged for overdue accounts.

A home assessed at $200,000 would pay $4,710.

Nearly 82 cents of every property tax dollar raised in South Thomaston will go to Regional School Unit 13. Another 5 cents goes to Knox County. The remaining amount goes for municipal services.
