WALDOBORO — Medomak Valley earned a free pass to the state Little League 11- and 12-year-old baseball tournament.

Now, the real work begins.

Medomak Valley won the District 2 championship by default when other leagues within the district — namely, Lincoln County, Five Town, Oceanside and Waldo County — opted out due to residual effects from COVID-19.

This year’s state tournament is slated to begin on Saturday, July 24 in Old Orchard Beach.

Team members for Medomak Valley include Konnor Schofield, Jacolby Severson, Owen Dostie, Ashton Lowe, Colby Simmons, Devin Benedix, Tucker Brown, Landon Morrison, Nolan Wellman, Wyatt Hood, Liam Feeley, Carter Jackson and Cole Esancy. The team is coached by Patrick Hood, Chris Wellman and Keith Simmons.

“Practices have been going well,” said coach Hood. “We continue to evolve as a team and strive to learn how to play cleaner baseball to be better prepared for the next level. Our team feels fortunate to have a direct route to the state tournament, but will find ways to earn that trip through scrimmages and increased practices.”

Medomak Valley’s first game in the double-elimination tournament is slated for Saturday, July 24 at 7 p.m., where it will face the District 5 champion at 7 p.m.

The winner of that game will advance to face the District 3 champions on Sunday, July 25 at 4:30 p.m., while the loser will play in an elimination game on Tuesday, July 27 at 4:30 p.m.

To prepare for the state event, Medomak Valley has scheduled scrimmages against local teams.

There are six division champions in the state competition, including District 1 Calais, District 2 Medomak Valley and District 4 Saco.
