From the desk of Pope Memorial Humane Society’s Foster Coordinator Brandi Moore,

It’s summer in Maine. That means beach weather, fairs, festivals and blueberry pie. After a bit of a late start, it’s also Maine’s kitten season! We are seeing an increase in pregnant and nursing mama cats, along with motherless kittens that need our help to get a good start in life.

So what exactly is kitten season? Although kittens can be born anytime during the year, a majority arrives in the spring and summer months, particularly in a northern climate like Maine’s. Spaying and neutering can go a long way toward preventing this influx of homeless kittens from occurring in the first place. But once they’re here, they need help to grow up and find their forever homes.

Pope places pregnant or nursing cats in foster homes until their babies are old enough for adoption. We also foster motherless kittens not old enough to be adopted. We have some wonderful, and greatly appreciated, kitten foster parents, who care for the little fur balls every year!

Thanks to foster homes, many kittens and mother cats are saved from homelessness.

But we could use some new members in our foster family. Fosters help out not only with the mamas and kittens, but also with some of our seniors and other kitties that need a home to recuperate from illness or injury; or are not thriving in the shelter due to being in their golden years.

If you think being a foster family to a deserving dog or cat is something you might enjoy doing, please go to the Pope website and fill out an online foster application. We need foster homes year round, but most especially in the spring and summer months during kitten season.
