Another Knox County resident was diagnosed with COVID-19, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday.

The additional case brings the total of Knox County residents who have the virus at some point during the past 16 months to 1,150. The number of hospitalizations remain at 36. Six people have died since mid-March 2020.

Statewide, an additional 38 cases were diagnosed, bringing the total to 69,156.

One additional death was reported, a man 80 or older from Cumberland County. The total deaths statewide rose to 861.

The number of people in the hospital across the state currently is 31 with 16 in critical care, and six on ventilators.

In terms of vaccinations, an additional 53 people have been vaccinated in Knox County with 73 percent of the population having received their final dose. This is better than the statewide average of 67 percent.

There are, however, counties with much lower rates — Somerset at 53 percent and Piscataquis at 54 percent.

Health officials have warned that areas with low vaccination rates are potential regions where variants of the virus can spread throughout those communities.
