THOMASTON — Municipal officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony June 23 to recognize businesses that moved into the Watts Block building downtown.

The building was the home of the town office and the police department until the new municipal building was completed just before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Blueberry Moose, Coastal Cards, Jessica LeCaptain Photography, Coastal Mountain Chiropractic, Spindrift Massage and Dance N’ Art Studio all had ribbon cuttings in front of their stores.

Flipside Café and Element Furniture on the other side of Main Street also had ribbon cuttings with town officials.

“With the town’s municipal offices relocating to the former Lura Libby School, the Main Street store frontages were open and available for local businesses to expand in a prime location,” said Town Manager Kara George.

Select Board member and chair of the Watts Block Trustees Bill Hahn said the town also has plans to update Watts Hall for future public use.

“The second floor auditorium and meeting room are being renovated and made available for a variety of events,” Hahn said. “We look forward to creating a facility that serves our town as an economic driver, as well as a community gathering place.”

Brian Doyle, the town’s economic development specialist, said the town has created a downtown merchant group to focus on improving the downtown experience as well.

Later this summer, the town planned events for downtown Thomaston, such as scavenger hunts and a concert series featuring local musicians, Doyle said.

Also in attendance for the ribbon cutting were Town Manager Kara George, Select Board Chair Diane Giese and economic development committee member Charlie Grover.
