MARTINSVILLE/ST. GEORGE — On Friday, July 2, “The Secret Commonwealth,” an exhibit of hooked rugs and paintings by Anne Cox, kicks off the 2021 summer season of art shows at Hedgerow Gallery. An opening reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. The centerpiece of the show are the five rugs Cox hooked over this past winter.

“I started thinking about ‘The Secret Commonwealth’ after listening to an audio recording of the second volume of Philip Pullman’s trilogy, ‘The Book of Dust,’ which has that title,” Cox said. “Pullman was inspired by Scotch-Irish folklore about the mostly invisible world of creatures like fairies and other mysterious phenomena. I don’t exactly believe in fairies, but I wanted to capture how those things which are not seen—which I do believe in—bring light and energy to dark places.”

Cox said the paintings she’s included in the show—also part of her winter’s work—served as a chance to further explore how the “not seen” emerges even as she concentrates on painting what she is seeing.

Cox’s show runs through July 11. Hedgerow Gallery is located at 8 Ridge Road at the corner of Ridge Road and Route 131 on the St. George Peninsula. For hours and more information, visit hedgerowdesign.com.
