WARREN — The Diamondbacks scored the most runs of the six teams during the regular season, which helped lead the squad to nine wins, and that ability to consistently cross the plate paid positive dividends again in the Medomak Valley Little League softball postseason.

After losing to No. 3 Warren 7-4 on Tuesday, June 15 in Waldoboro in its first chance to clinch the league championship, No. 2 Diamondbacks went on the offensive and recorded a 11-5 victory on Thursday, June 17 in the finale in Warren.

Players and coaches in the league were happy to get back on the diamond for a full season of action after missing out in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The Diamondbacks include manager Ashley Catapano-Kangas and coach Katie Nicholls, along with players Sydney Nicholls, Rheanne Simmons, Ivy McCollett, Corrie Simmons, Ariel Castner, Maya Catapano-Kangas, Lylah Campbell, Kaelyn Read, Jaya Dunbar, Kehli Maxcy, Anna Reed, Alexa Trott and Haddee Brown.

Warren includes manager Mike York and coaches Danielle Wyman and Darryl Townsend, along with players Paige Gerlack, Grace Townsend, Jennika Schumann, Brianna Neal, Ariana Pierpont, Kendall Wyman, Brianna Knutson, Danielle Collins, Maggie Martin, Lexi Weaver, Autumn Quinn, Olivia Campbell, Haylee Chandler and Raquelle Ames.

The final regular-season records, with runs scored and allowed, by each team were: The First, 9-2, 144 runs for, 82 against; Diamondbacks (Waldoboro/Friendship), 9-2, 154 for, 79 against; Warren, 7-4, 140 for, 81 against; Fillies (Waldoboro/Friendship) 3-6, 86 for, 102 against; Colby and Gale, 2-7, 66 for, 160 against; and G.R.H. & Sons, 55 for, 141 against.

The First, Colby and Gale and G.R.H. & Sons, from other surrounding areas, are not members of the Medomak Valley Little League, so, did not participate in the playoffs. The three teams that did participate in the postseason were Diamondbacks, Warren and Fillies.

In the playoffs, Fillies (4-7) defeated Warren, lost to Diamondbacks and lost to Warren. Warren split with Fillies and split with Diamondbacks in the final two games.

Overall, the Diamondbacks finished 11-3, as it lost twice against The First in the regular season and once to Warren in the playoffs. Warren finished 9-6 overall.

On Thursday in Warren, the Diamondbacks earned an 11-5 victory.

For Diamondbacks, Ivy McCollett (2 walks, strikeout) pitched the first inning and Sidney Nicholls (3 walks, 12 strikeouts) worked the final five innings.

Pacing the champs’ offense were Maya Catapano-Kangas (run), Ivy McCollett (run), Sidney Nicholls (hit, 2 runs), Ariel Castner (run), Kaelynn Read (single, double), Corrie Simmons (single, run), Jaya Dunbar (single, 2 runs), Haddee Brown (single, run) and Kehli Maxcy (single, run).

For Warren, Haylee Chandler and Lexi Weaver pitched. Olivia Campbell, Paige Gerlack, Grace Townsend, Kiki Ames and Maggie Martin scored, and Maggie Martin caught an outfield fly ball and made a double play, said Ashley Catapano-Kangas.

Warren started with two runs in the first inning. In the second, the Diamondbacks answered with one. In the third, the Diamondbacks scored four runs and added three more in the fourth. In the fifth inning, the Diamondbacks added three runs, which was answered with three runs by Warren.

Both teams were emotionally charged and enthusiastically cheered their teammates, said Ashley Catapano-Kangas. The Diamondbacks benefited from steals, “played with a lot heart, and truly acted as a team. The girls recognized that they all had a part to play and celebrated clean fielding, accurate throws, strong pitching, and teammates striking out by attempting honest swings. Many players on our team tried new things such as stealing, sliding, and throw outs which was exciting to see,” Ashley Catapano-Kangas said.

The coach continued, “After the game when both teams lined up, Warren demonstrated good sportsmanship with knocking elbows in lieu of high fives, smiled and cheered. Justin Kangas, who is both a parent of a Diamondbacks player and the Warren [Community School] principal, commended the Warren team for their effort and provided them with celebratory ice cream for their hard work this season. The Diamondbacks interacted with their friends on the Warren team and commended them on some nice plays made throughout the game as well. The Diamondbacks celebrated their victory at a local ice cream stand. I think the best thing was seeing two teams of girls who love the sport and are friends with one another, demonstrate a healthy competitive spirit throughout the game, celebrate one another’s victories, and then turn around and continue their friendships without rivalry. In the end, that is what this league is about. We want to develop a strong and loving softball community, that focuses on individual development and fosters positive youth relationships.”

On Tuesday, at John Foster Field in Waldoboro, Warren prevailed 7-4.

For Diamondbacks, Sidney Nicholls (6 walks, 12 strikeouts) pitched the entire game.

Twelve of 15 Diamondback batters walked.

For Warren, Haylee Chandler (15 walks, 11 strikeouts) worked the pitching circle, while Haylee Chandler (single, double), Paige Gerlack (single, 3 runs), Olivia Campbell (3 runs) and Brianna Neal (run) led the offense.

“This game, Warren really brought it,” said Ashley Catapano-Kangas. “The fielding was clean, they were swinging the bat, and the catcher did a great job protecting the plate from steals.”
