A fire heavily damaged a Birch Street home early May 14.

A woman who was at the house was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center with burns to her hands and feet.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted Rockland Fire and Rockland Police in the investigation and it was determined that the tenant was smoking in bed which ignited materials in the bedroom, according to Rockland Fire Chief Chris Whytock.

Approximately 400 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire with heavy fire and smoke damage to the second floor.

When crews arrived, there were flames shooting out the second floor windows of the house at 19 Birch St. Smoke could be seen from a mile away as it billowed out the windows.

Fire crews from the region — including Camden and Rockport — assisted Rockland in battling the flames.

The property is owned by David Hillgrove Sr. of Rockland, according to city assessment records. The owner's home address is different than the Birch Street property.

Rockland police officers removed a dog from a shed next to the house and took it to a woman who was standing outside the home.

The Maine Fire Marshal was called.

Birch Street was blocked off to vehicle traffic. Birch Street is located between Broadway and Maverick streets.
