A 49-year-old Thomaston woman was arrested Nov. 13, accused of severely assaulting another woman.

Melissa E. James was arrested Nov. 13 by Thomaston police and charged with aggravated assault and criminal mischief.

Judge Paul Mathews set bail at $2,500 cash during James' initial appearance in Knox County court. Her next court date is scheduled for Feb. 11.

An affidavit filed in court by Thomaston police states the victim suffered an injured knee and had strangulation marks on her neck. The injury to the knee later turned out to be a broken leg, according to the police report.

James claimed she was acting in self defense, according to the affidavit.
