Merryspring’s gardens will be the setting for two Summer Talk events in August.

Herb garden walk

Gardener and herbalist Denise DeSpirito will lead a walking tour of the herb garden Tuesday, Aug. 18 at noon.

DeSpirito will lead the group around the herb garden to see what’s blooming, check out recent additions, and speak about how to harvest different plants and their seeds at this point in the growing season. Guests are welcome to ask questions about the plants on display as well as their home gardens.

Denise DeSpirito is gardener and herbalist. She has grown herbs all over the Northeast, including Avena Botanicals in Rockport, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in New York, and Farmacy Herbs in Rhode Island. She currently serves as Garden Manager at Merryspring.

Perennial biology

Gardener John Fromer will lead a presentation on perennial biology and classification at Merryspring Tuesday, Aug. 25 at noon.

In this class Fromer will teach gardeners to go “behind the scenes” and learn how plants function and grow though basic botany and classification skills. Fromer says “Once you know ‘how’, you will understand your plants’ needs, and you will make better, informed decisions when managing your gardens.”

Fromer has been a Maine Master Gardener since 1998 and runs Appleton Ridge Flower and Vegetable Farm with his wife Kathy, also a Maine Master Gardener. Together they grow flowers, vegetables, and herbs in a sustainable and authentic fashion.
