From the desk of Pope Memorial Humane Society’s Shelter Manager Theresa Gargan,

When making my pet pick this week, I realized how far we have come as a shelter since 2006 when I became a staff member. We did amazing things for a small facility and saved many lives through sheer heart and determination.

But there was always that wish to be able to do more for some of the animals in our care; to say yes and go ahead with a life-saving surgery or procedure; to go that extra mile, provide the long-term care and medicines necessary for them to be able to go to their forever homes.

Because of the growing support from our supporters and communities, both near and far, we have been able to say yes to so many more of the animals in need that come into our care. Giving them a chance for a wonderful life is why we are here, and we are here because of you. It is one of the greatest collaborations ever!

Without further ado, I want to introduce you to one such cat. To say Boris is fabulous would be an understatement. This handsome boy came to us completely matted with one dead eye and a hole in his upper palette. Our veterinarian believes an infection in his eye likely caused the palette to abscess, leaving Boris with an opening in the roof of his mouth.

In spite of this, Boris is one of the happiest cats we've ever met. He follows everyone around demanding attention, if you stop to pet him, Boris rolls over, encouraging belly rubs. You are likely to have him greet you in the lobby as he looks to everyone as a new member of his family.

To enable Boris a chance for his best life, we are raising the necessary funds to have his eye removed and palette repaired. For him, it will mean no more infections from both his eye and the food going up into his nose. For his new family it will mean a healthier, happier (if that is possible) kitty.

If you would like to help us get Boris healthy and ready for his new life or are interested in adding a truly wonderful family member to your home, you can reach us at 594-2200. To make a donation towards Boris’ surgery and for other animals in need, visit popehumane.org. Thank you.

Our wish list this week includes paper towels, disinfectant wipes, canned cat and dog food. Boris is requesting Temptation Treats for he and his fellow felines.
