Traffic was down to one lane on Route 73 this week as the Maine Department of Transportation was working on drainage improvements to that stretch of road in Owls Head.

Temporary traffic lights were placed on both sides of the road near the Head of the Bay.

Work was needed because there were times when water flowed across the road because of insufficient drainage and created ice build up on the road during the winter. There is an underground spring on the hill and the work is rerouting that water.

A DOT spokesman said May 6 that the work is likely to be done by Thursday afternoon, May 7.

The road will be paved after June 1, according to the DOT.
