The Oceanside Middle School wrestling team, as well as Mariner mat student-athletes, were in the midst of a strong late-winter Pine Tree Wrestling League season when the world essentially stopped.

The PTWL campaign, along with most business, social and other athletic organizations, halted operations due to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

As health concerns developed, the middle school mat league cancelled the remainder of the season before the young wrestlers could participate in their regional and league championship meets.

During the regular season, the Mariners, as a team and individuals, still realized solid success.

In fact, Oceanside fraternal twins Madolin and Gavin Ripley were unbeaten when the campaign ended. Last year, the siblings won regional titles and finished second in the league championship meet.

The final 2020 individual Mariner records were:

99 pounds — Clay Whithed, 11 wins and five losses.

99 pounds — Taylor Frace, two wins and two losses.

105 pounds — Tim Gleason, nine wins and nine losses.

111 pounds — Madolin Ripley, 19 wins and no losses, with 17 pins, plus crossover champion.
