Thomaston town office is hoping to hire a new town clerk.

At the Select Board meeting April 8 held via Zoom, Town Manager Kara George said she completed interviews for the town clerk position.

George was the Thomaston town clerk until September 2019, when she was named interim town manager. George signed a three-year contract for the position with the Select Board in January.

Denise Hylton has been temporary deputy clerk since September 2019.

George said she had a preferred candidate, but did not know when the town would be able to hire for the position. She said the training was usually done in person by a state entity.

Select Person Diane Giese asked if remote training was possible. George said it probably was not.

In other business, George said the staggering of employees at the town office appears to be working. She said the staff learned to forward voicemail messages as audio files, so she and other employees are able to receive and return messages faster.

George also said the solar panel project for Public Works is on hold.

The board discussed town meetings and if they will be able to hold them at the scheduled time. The town is waiting for guidance from the governor.

Giese said she is concerned about public turnout at the town meeting and reminded the other board members they should be “cheerleaders” when the stay-at-home order is finally over.

Giese asked how the police department was doing. George said they have been following the directives to not pull vehicles over for minor infractions such as having expired registrations.

Giese asked about Thomaston Grocery. The board did not know why the business was closed or when it would be opening again.

Select Person Bill Hahn received board permission to continue to push forward on the grant for Watts Block. The grant is to restore the Watts Hall auditorium and “make it more income producing.”
