Two U.S. Coast Guard members stationed in Rockland were selected as winners in the Pelican Products' Portraits of Protection photo competition, honoring real-life heroes in local communities.
Driving a 140-ft ice-breaking tug, the crew forced themselves onto a block of ice which froze around them.
Justin is pictured in a dry suit as he tests the ice thickness to ensure it is safe enough for other crew members to transit around.
Pelican selected the image as a depiction of bravery and courage shown by heroes in order to protect citizens every day.
Portraits of Protection was created to bring together Pelican’s photographer and first responder communities to immortalize heroes who’ve stepped forward in the face of danger.
