A new business, Salons by the Sea, is planned to open in mid-June at 330 Commercial St. Stephanie and James Turner of Union received approval from the Planning Board to open a business with four private salon suites for rent to independent hair stylists, beauticians, or people interested in providing other beauty-related services.

The new business will be located at Rockport Center, in the old Fuller Chevrolet building. It will be in the suite behind Maine Coast Weddings and Special Events, which moved into the front portion in February.

Stephanie Turner said the concept is gaining popularity nationwide and represents an opportunity for a hair stylist or beautician who has developed a loyal following to own their own business without the headaches of opening a big salon.

“It’s the dream of every hair stylist to own his or her own business,” said Turner, but she added that the overhead costs, commitments and time constraints of management often make the task too daunting to undertake. Tenants will share a waiting room.

Turner, who has spent 30 years in the hair-styling business, currently travels back and forth between California and Maine. She and her husband met at The Waterfront Restaurant in the 1980s and recently bought a house in Union. She hopes that this new venture will allow her to stay in Maine full-time.

The units will be furnished and include all utilities, but tenants will have the opportunity to decorate their suites however they choose. There will also be a possibility for renters to share units if they do not want to rent a unit full-time. Turner said the goal is to collect a certain rent for each unit and that the business would be open to alternative arrangements that work for the beauticians.

At the Planning Board’s consideration of her site review application, Turner estimated the business would be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but she said tenants will have 24/7 access to the building and their suites to accommodate their schedules.

The Planning Board unanimously approved the site review application.
