Firefighters from several departments responded Monday night, April 8, to a vehicle fire in the Union Public Works garage that resulted in heavy damage to the building and the loss of one vehicle.

At about 9:40 p.m. a deputy saw smoke coming from the Union Public Works building and notified dispatch, according to Town Manager Jay Feyler. Fire departments from Union, Warren, Waldoboro, Washington and Hope responded.

The Maine State Fire Marshal's Office investigated Tuesday, and determined the blaze started in a 2003 GMC truck, most likely as an electrical fire, Feyler said. The truck was destroyed. Other trucks and equipment received heavy smoke damage and some minor heat damage, Feyler reported.

Smoke and heat damage to the building was extensive, and Feyler said it will likely need a complete overhaul.
