The Pearl restaurant, a landmark eatery on the end of the pier at Rockland Harbor Park, will not open this summer.

Restaurant owner Larry Reed made the announcement Monday, April 8, on his Facebook page.

"It is with sadness that I tell everyone that The Pearl will NOT be opening this summer! The work that needs to be done has been scheduled and will take place throughout the summer. We will be back next May with an even better Pearl!," Reed stated in the post.

The issue of The Pearl also arose during the Monday evening Rockland City Council meeting. The City Council postponed action on the application for liquor and victualer licenses for The Pearl.

City officials said they were unsure the restaurant would be open for this summer.

Reed took ownership of the restaurant in May 2016.

The property is owned by Waterfront Group Inc. The president of that limited liability corporation, Crystal Darling, has said that the property is up for sale.

She is seeking approval from the Rockland Planning Board to build a 2,000-square-foot restaurant across the road leading from Park Drive to Harbor Park. The building on the land side of the pier, which had been occupied by Conte's restaurant, is expected to be demolished.
