The long awaited South Main Street sewer project is set to begin the week of April 8.

The city released the project schedule Thursday, March 27.

Once the project begins, South Main from Pleasant Street to Thomaston Street will be one lane — limited to southbound traffic. Northbound traffic will be rerouted up Thomaston Street and then Broadway. This will be in effect both day and night.

Construction bids were opened Dec. 20. Nitram Excavation and General Contractor Inc. was selected to do the work for about $1.7 million.

The project calls for installing separate sewer and storm water lines from near where the railroad tracks cross South Main to the intersection of Water Street.

The project is expected to be completed by July 22. Paving will be done in July.
