At the Maine State Scholastic Team Chess Championship Sunday, March 3, Camden-Rockport Elementary School’s chess team finished first in the K-3 category. Lincolnville Central School took second place, for the second year in a row.

This is the first win for a CRES team at the tournament, which is the largest scholastic chess tournament in Maine, attracting players from all over the state. Coached by Mr. Bruce Haffner, of Lincolnville, CRES sent a contingent of eight players.

In the tournament, all players completed four games of chess. Team results were scored by adding up the number of wins of the top three finishers on each team. At the tournament’s end, CRES’s top three finishers were Hector Clayton (four wins, no losses), Miles Kaplan (four wins, no losses), and team captain Sam Blystone (three wins, one loss). All three boys are Camden residents and are currently in third grade.
