Our pet pick of the week is Ellie, a 3 1/2-year-old coonhound/lab mix. Just one look from this sweet girl, with her beautiful doe eyes, is enough to melt the heart. Ellie was a bit of a homebody in her last home so she can be a little timid upon first meeting, but warms up nicely. Although beautiful, she is a little on the chubby side, so for health reasons she will benefit from getting out and about, taking longer walks, seeing new things and smelling new smells. She’s a hound dog after all, and loves to follow her nose. Ellie already knows the basics– sit, stay etc., and will let you know when she needs to go out and barks to let you know when she’s done. She’s all set to go home, she’s just waiting on her person to discover her. Is that you?

February is Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month and we have several awesome rabbits ready to go home. Coraline, a Flemish Giant rabbit, has a personality as large as she is. That’s 15 pounds' worth of personality! She is sweet, playful and curious. We all love her endearing antics at the shelter. She was recently a big hit as a special guest at the Coastal Children’s Museum. Both she and her sister, Cassidy, were part of a state animal abuse seizure, along with Crumpet, an adorable brown-and-white Dutch rabbit who is also available. Lydia and Beulah, two Mini Rex rabbits, are the softest, plushest rabbits you will ever pet. All the rabbits are fixed and ready to hop on into someone’s home and heart.

Don’t forget this Friday, Feb. 22, is the last night in a series of Friday nights to enjoy Burger Night at the Craignair Inn and Restaurant on Clarks Island in Spruce head in support of the shelter. Go ahead, treat yourself for a good cause. Reservations are appreciated at 594-7644. Thanks for your support.

Join us Saturday, Feb. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the shelter as we celebrate International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day. Why not, right? This free event is for all ages and a great chance to get out of the house on a chilly winter day to have some fun. We will be decorating homemade dog biscuits using all pet-safe ingredients and making no-bake dog biscuits. Everyone will be able to bring their creations home or donate them to the shelter dogs. Plus, we’ll have a fun movie playing and some human snacks available!
