Medomak Valley's Eli Miller and Erik Benner experienced the kind of high school wrestling season few dream of — and the Panthers capped it (for now) — with prestigious state Class B individual championships on Saturday, Feb. 16 far from home.

The Panther duo, who finished the terrific trifecta with league, regional and state titles this season, helped Medomak Valley place third at Mattanawcook Academy — 125 miles and more than two hours from Waldoboro.

The Panthers also received the Maine Principals' Association Class B South Good Sportsmanship Banner at the meet, which proved, once again, Medomak Valley mat athletes are good on and off the mat.

The state Class B team scores were: Wells 161.5, Dexter 99, Medomak Valley 89.5, Mattanawcook Academy 81, Foxcroft Academy  of Dover-Foxcroft 76, Lisbon/Oak Hill of Lisbon Falls and Sabattus 65, Mountain Valley of Rumford 62, Bucksport 53, Mount View of Thorndike 39, Piscataquis of Guilford 36, Ellsworth 29.5, Winslow 29, John Bapst of Bangor 26, Dirigo of Dixfield 19, Belfast 16.5, Bangor Christian 16, Oceanside of Rockland 15, Penobscot Valley of Howland 14, Fryeburg Academy 13.5, Washington Academy of East Machias 11, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 4, Calais 3, Fort Kent 3, Mount Desert Island 3, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 3, Madison 1, Caribou, Lee Academy, Monmouth Academy, Carrabec and Richmond no score.

Medomak Valley also had won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B title and finished second in the Class b South meet.

It has been a remarkable season — again, thus far — for Miller, a senior, and Benner, a junior. Miller surpassed his brother, Cyril, for the school's career wins record and also reached 100 career pins. Miller reached 100 career wins this winter.

On Saturday, the dynamic duo put another notch in their championship belts with state titles. Miller won at 160 pounds and Benner at 220. Miller also was state champion at 152 pounds last year.

Miller and Benner finished 3-0 in the state meet.
