Large, free reusable shopping bags are now available throughout the city.

The bags were made possible through the donations of eight local businesses and organizations.

Rockland Main Street Inc. ordered the 5,000 bags that can be used by shoppers in Rockland now that single-use plastic bags are banned. That ban took effect Jan. 1.

Rockland Main Street Executive Director Gordon Page displayed the bags at Monday night's Rockland City Council meeting.

The bags encourage reduction of waste, reuse, and recycling and have the logos of the eight businesses.

Distribution locations will include bag sponsor locations, retail shops, schools and the library. The sponsors are First National Bank, Evergreen Home Performance, Island Institute, J. Edward Knight Insurance, the Kiwanis Club of Rockland, Maine Boats Homes & Harbors, Pen Bay Medical Center and the Penobscot Bay YMCA.
