It was cold outside Feb. 9, but the chilliest place that afternoon was 16 Bay View during West Bay Rotary's annual Chili Challenge.

Of the 10 restaurants and professional kitchens aiming to please the crowd and raise funds for local organizations, this year's winners were First Place, Waterfront Restaurant; Second Place, French & Brawn; and Third Place, Quarry Hill.

Local restaurants served up their best chilies to members of the public who were invited to try all of them, and be the judges. In addition to the winners, participating eateries included The Jack, Rockport Diner, The Norumbega Inn, The Wave Cafe, Bagel Cafe, Marriner's Restaurant and Sea Dog Brewing Company.

The Chili Challenge is one of West Bay Rotary's five major fundraising events, with net proceeds benefiting charities and nonprofit organizations.

Sponsors for this year's Chili Challenge were Allen Insurance and Financial, David C. Olivas, DDS, Forristall Ocean Engineering, French & Brawn, North Atlantic Painting, Pen Bay Medical Center, Robbins Lumber, Sandy Cox, Better Homes and Gardens/Masiello Group, Williams CPA Group and Camden National Bank.

Each year the club makes financial and hands-on contributions to worthy projects and organizations in the area. It has provided vocational scholarships to assist students and heating oil funds to the three area towns for distribution. Members have supported local organizations such as Midcoast Habitat for Humanity, Knox County Homeless Coalition, One Less Worry and food banks. While giving locally, the club also supports programs of Rotary International, such as the worldwide program to eradicate polio.
