Winning a regional championship is a feat in and of itself, but doing so in one’s home gymnasium is a flavor the Camden Hills wrestling team likely will savor for some time.

The Windjammers — traditionally a powerhouse who annually vie for conference, regional and state championships — held off Mount Ararat-Brunswick and 11 other schools on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Camden Hills Regional High School to clinch the Class A North crown.

For the Windjammers, it was their first regional team title in five years, when they, then competing in Class B, won the championship in Belfast.

And, after winning the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A championship on Saturday, Feb. 2, the Windjammers will eye the trifecta — namely, a state Class A title and their first since 2014 — on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Cony High School in Augusta.

Camden Hills got topnotch contributions up and down the ladder on Saturday, as Ian Henderson and Noah Lang led the way, as they clinched individual regional titles in the 138-pound and 145-pound weight classes.

Eric Andrews, Dawson Allen and Joshua Saucier added second-place finishes at 106 and 132, while Devin Hutcheson placed third at 113 and Henry Pharris, Kristina Kelly and Justin Secotte fourth at 170, 126 and 182, respectively.

Thus, the Windjammers qualified nine mat athletes for the state Class A competition.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class at the regional competitions advance to the state meet.

The event also was witness to a pair of Camden Hills mat athletes who hit impressive benchmarks in their careers as Lang, a senior, notched his 200th victory, while Hutcheson, a junior, earned his 100th career win.

The Class A North team scores were: Camden Hills 166, Mount Ararat-Brunswick 154.5, Cony 115, Nokomis of Newport 112, Oxford Hills of South Paris 95, Mount Blue of Farmington 94, Morse of Bath 86, Windham-Gray-New Gloucester 74, Erskine Academy of South China 64, Skowhegan 32, Messalonskee of Oakland 16, Gardiner 13 and Bangor 6.
