The body of a 57-year-old Union man who fled after crashing a car he had stolen last week has been found.

A missing persons report had been issued by police for Steven Sanner out of concern for his safety.

He had been sought since Thursday night, Jan. 10, when Knox County deputies responded to a residence on Collinstown Road regarding a man who was banging on the door of the house. A woman at the house said Sanner appeared to be intoxicated and had made suicidal threats.

The woman said Sanner's car had gone off the road and was stuck near her residence.

Prior to the deputies' arrival, Sanner had driven off with the victim's car, headed towards Waldo County. As deputies were taking reports, the car was located off the road just over the town line in Searsmont.
A search of the area and surrounding residences failed to locate Sanner that night.
State police said that a resident in neighboring Montville found Sanner's body outside near a woodshed. There was no autopsy but his death was likely due to hypothermia, according to police.
