The American Red Cross urges blood and platelet donors to make an appointment now to give and help ensure patients can get the treatment they need.

A seasonal decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, when donors get busy with family gatherings and travel. In addition, severe winter weather can cause blood drive cancellations and negatively affect the blood supply.

An appointment to donate blood and platelets can be made by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App at redcrossblood.org/bloodapp or by calling 800-733-2767.

Three Red Cross Blood Drives are scheduled for Knox County during the holidays.

There will be a Red Cross Blood Drive in Rockport at the YMCA, 116 Union St., Dec. 28 from 1 to 6 p.m. and also at Camden National Bank in Rockport, 245 Commercial St., Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a Red Cross Blood Drive in Union at Thompson Community Center, 51 South Union Road, Jan. 2 from noon to 5 p.m.

Those who come to give Dec. 20 through Jan. 6 will receive a long-sleeved Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.
