Our pet pick of the week is Duke, an adult neutered male bloodhound mix that came to us from our southern rescue partner in South Carolina. This big boy is 80 pounds of love and sweetness. He’s a gentle soul who doesn’t realize he isn’t supposed to be a lap dog. You’ll have to scooch over on the couch to make room for this lovable guy.

A fun day for Duke would be to go for a long walk where there are plenty of new smells to smell. Make sure he is leashed, though, because he’ll follow his nose with or without you. He’s a hound dog, after all. Duke doesn’t like to share his food, so we recommend a home without other pets or small children. Unlike a typical hound, Duke doesn’t appear to have much to say by way of howling. So, if you’re looking for an affectionate, even-tempered, people-loving dog, stop in and meet Duke.

Join us Saturday, Dec. 15, for the Ugly Sweater Contest, Auction and Dance at the Rockland American Legion, 335 Limerock St., to benefit the animals at PMHS. The fun starts at 5 p.m. with yummy finger food and a jam-packed auction of fabulous items just in time for the holidays. Don’t forget to wear your “ugliest” holiday sweater for a chance to win the coveted Ugly Sweater Trophy. The ugly sweater contest will be judged from 6:30 to 7. Stay for dancing to the music of the Dogs. Tickets are $15 per person, with proceeds going to the shelter. Bring in canned pet food or other supplies and be entered to win a prize. You don’t want to miss this super fun holiday event.

Looking for some holiday gifts for your loved ones? We have just what you need. We have Flagship Cinema Coupon Booklets for sale for the movie-lover in your life for just $25. These booklets make great stocking stuffers. While at the shelter, pick up a copy of our beautiful 2019 Pet Calendar, celebrating 30 years of saving lives and creating families. It’s filled with photos of shelter animals and cherished pets. The calendar is only $10, with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to animal care at the shelter.

You can also help to raise money for the shelter when you shop online! Of course, we always recommend that you shop locally when you can, as our community is what makes us strong, but, if you find yourself shopping at Amazon, consider using Amazon Smile and they will donate a portion to your favorite charity. Go to smile.amazon.com and choose us, listed as Humane Society of Knox County. Thanks for your support.
