An auto body shop was destroyed by a fire early Sunday morning, Dec. 9.

The shop was operated by Richard French at 129 Augusta Road, according to Washington Fire Chief Phil Meunier.

The fire was called in shortly after 4:30 a.m. When the first crew arrived, the center section of the building was fully engulfed in flames and the roof soon collapsed.

The chief said one vehicle was inside.

There were no injuries.

Fire crews from Liberty, Jefferson, Somerville and Union assisted Washington. Crews left the scene at about 8 a.m.

The cause of the blaze is undetermined, but the chief said he had asked the state Fire Marshal's Office to send an investigator to examine the scene.
