The drivers of two vehicles were taken to the hospital Friday afternoon, Nov. 30, following a head-on crash on Route 17 by the Green Thumb, according to Rockport police.

A 2014 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Barry Dearborn, 25, of Jefferson, was traveling east on Route 17 when he veered into the oncoming lane.

A 2009 GMC pickup operated by Allen Schaeffer, 47, also of Jefferson, was traveling west and attempted to avoid the crash, but the Dearborn vehicle veered back into his lane and struck the pickup truch head-on near the intersection with Porter Street.

Rockport police and fire personnel responded to the crash, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

Dearborn had to be extricated from his vehicle by firefighters.

There were no passengers in either vehicle and both drivers were taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport with unspecified injuries. The two were taken by Northeast Ambulance and Rockland emergency medical services.

Both vehicles were destroyed.

The crash is still under investigation by Sgt. James Moore and Officer Chris Taylor. Also responding to the scene was Deputy Paul Spear of the Knox County Sheriff's Office.
