High school golfers from Camden Hills of Rockport and Medomak Valley of Waldoboro made bids to win state championships on Saturday, Oct. 6, but, while the Windjammers made a strong push, neither Midcoast squad, ultimately, could climb to the top of the links mountain.

Camden Hills finished third in Class A and Medomak Valley ninth in Class B in tournaments at the Natanis Golf Club.

The state Class A team scores were: Mount Ararat of Topsham 312, Scarborough 317, Camden Hills 331 (3rd on tiebreaker), Thornton Academy of Saco 331, Falmouth 342, Greely of Cumberland 343, Bonny Eagle of Standish 347, Lewiston 349, Gorham 358, Edward Little of Auburn 360 and Messalonskee of Oakland 377.

The state Class B team scores were: York 333, Mount Desert Island 342, Freeport 345, Cape Elizabeth 346, Hermon 356, Gardiner 371, Erskine Academy of South China 381, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 406, Medomak Valley 409 and Waterville 412.

The state C team scores were: Houlton 333, St. Dominic of Auburn 352, North Yarmouth Academy 366, Monmouth Academy  376 (4th on tiebreaker), Orono 376, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 382 Winthrop 384, George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill 388, Ashland 459 and Valley of Bingham 563

In Class A, the Eagles of Mount Ararat, unbeaten the season and league champions, finished at +24, remarkable when one considered teams combined their low four-golfer scores over the 18 holes to compile a total. The Eagles had three golfers finish in the 70s.

For Camden Hills, Cole Anderson shot 71, Parker Hilchey 79, Jonathan Mahoney 86, Nate Johnson 95 and Drew Minery 98.

For Medomak Valley, Sean Sebrey finished at 91, Carson Murphy 96, Clayton Belcher 110, Leighton Winslow 112 and Merritt Gould 118. The Panthers won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B title this fall.

In Class A, Thornton Academy's Manuel Barbachano shot 70 as medalist, with Camden Hills' Anderson, Scarborough's Anthony Burnham and Mount Ararat's Caleb Manuel at 71.

In Class B, Cape Elizabeth's Austin Legge was medalist at 72.

In Class C, GSA's Percy Zentz finished at 76 for medalist distinction, while Mattanawcook's Max Woodman finished at 77.

Next up for area golfers are the state individual championships on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. at Natanis.

Midcoast student-athletes who have qualified for the states are: Camden Hills' Anderson, Hilchey and Johnson in Class A and Medomak Valley's Murphy in Class B.

Anderson is the three-time defending state Class A champion.
