The Rockport Fire Department is preparing for its 4th annual boot drive, which will be held at the intersection of Routes 17 and 90 on Friday, Aug. 10 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The fundraiser has become a familiar sight in Rockport over the years, as members of the fire department stand in the intersection, collecting donations from drivers in the boots of their firefighting uniforms as the traffic lights turn red. All proceeds from the fundraiser benefit the community. This year's goal is to continue to support the assistance the fire department provides and help purchase specialty equipment and new uniforms.

In addition to supporting the Rockport Fire Department's Pacific Engine Co., the boot drive will continue to benefit local students. A portion of the money raised will be given to students in the area who are heading off to college with scholarships.

"The boot drive has been a great idea, and 100 percent of the proceeds from the event go back to the community. Over the years I've honestly only had one comment from a driver about traffic during the fundraiser," said Fire Chief Jason Peasley on July 16.

The department recently added a new vehicle, "Squad 25," to their emergency response line-up. Squad 25 is a 2018 E-One Typhoon Pumper Truck. The Rockport Fire Department purchased specialty equipment for the vehicle, which can perform car extractions and some forestry services, in addition to serving as a rescue truck and a powerful water pump.

Anyone who will be out of town on Aug. 10 but would like to contribute to the boot drive may send donations to Pacific Engine Company, P.O. Box 142, Rockport, ME 04856.
