The week of March 26 to 30, the National Honor Society chapter at Medomak Valley High School ran a penny war, with classes competing to raise money for chemistry teacher Elizabeth Bianchi, who is battling cancer.

In a penny war, pennies are positive points, and silver coins are negative points; all money donated is donated to the designated cause. With an intial goal of $500, to be split between Bianchi and a cancer charity of her choice, the fundraiser brought in a total of $1.350, of which $900 was given to the teacher, and $450 went to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care.
