The undefeated top seed and the unlikely underdog: A sports tale as old as time, and one that played out on Monday, Feb. 12 as Machias Savings Bank and Rockport Fire Department tussled for the Midcoast Youth Boys 5th-6th Basketball League championship at the Flanagan Community Center.

No. 1 Machias Savings Bank went into the game against No. 7 Rockport Fire Department unbeaten, and wrapped up night the same way as it netted a 71-52 victory to claim the league crown.

Team members for Rockport Fire Department (6-6), coached by Jared Todd, include Quincy Messer, Noah Feener, Ryan Glaser, Karl Hokkanen, Liam O’Dwyer, Griffin Spear, Alex Todd, Brandt Cloutier and Reid Chester.

In Monday’s title game, Machias Savings Bank led 19-11 after the first quarter, 42-26 at halftime and 62-40 after three quarters.

Cohen Galley and Carter Galley had monster performances for Machias Savings Bank as the identical twin brothers tossed in 63 of the team’s 71 points, as Cohen poured in 36 and Carter 27. Robishaw also added six points and Banow two.

For Rockport Fire Department, Messer netted 14 points, while Glaser added 12; O’Dwyer, eight; Hokkanen and Todd, six; Spear, four; and Cloutier, two.

Machias Savings Bank finished 11-of-18 (61 percent) from the foul line, while Rockport Fire Department was 4-of-9 (44 percent).

The final regular-season standings were: Machias Savings Bank 8-0, Fisher Engineering 6-2, Stepping with the Stones 6-2, Mainely Lobster 5-3, R&D Trash 4-4, Cushing 4-4, Rockport Fire Department 3-5, St. George 3-5, S.D. Ryan 1-7 and Lanphere & Sons 0-8.

The previous playoff results included: No. 7 Rockport Fire Department beat No. 10 Lanphere & Sons, No. 8 St. George beat No. 9 S.D. Ryan, No. 7 Rockport Fire Department beat No. 2 Fisher Engineering, No. 6 Cushing beat No. 3 Stepping with the Stones, No. 1 Machias Savings Bank beat No. 8 St. George, No. 4 Mainely Lobster beat No. 5 R&D Trash, No. 7 Rockport Fire Department beat No. 6 Cushing and No. 1 Machias Savings Bank beat No. 4 Mainely Lobster.

Interestingly, on the sleeve of all league t-shirts was the following: "In memory of Tom Ford." Ford, a longtime youth coach in Hope, died last year.
