Harold L. Mitchell Jr., 96, died Feb. 1, 2018, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. He was born in Sommerville, Mass., Dec. 20, 1921. He was one of eight children of Aleta and Harold Mitchell Sr.

Mitch was educated in Rockland, Thomaston and Cushing schools.

He joined the Army in 1941 with the two Simpson brothers to fill the quota in Knox County, before Pearl Harbor during World War II.

Mitch worked as a freight trailer driver for Local 445 in New York for 33 years, retiring in 1978 due to service disability. In 1951, he married Doris McCormick in Middletown, N.Y. He was an avid boatman and member of the Newburgh, N.Y., Yacht Club.

Mitch returned to Maine in 1978 with his wife. They were active members of Broad Cove Church. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans in Rockland. He traveled with the DAV van throughout Maine to assist and recruit veterans to the DAV. He enjoyed hunting trips and fellowship with other disabled veterans on annual trips to Sheffield, Pa., sponsored by the Pennsylvania DAV.

Mitch and his wife volunteered for 20 years to distribute Forget-Me-Nots to benefit the DAV, in which they were very active.

He and his wife were RVers, joining Mid-Coast SAMS and Maine-A-Bagos, touring Maine, Canada and Florida.

Mitch is survived by his wife, Doris; a son, Paul, and his family of Tuxedo, N.Y.; a niece, Lu Ann Grusz, and her husband, Henry, and their family of Middletown, N.Y.; two sisters, Bernice Burakowski and her family of Sloatsburg, N.Y., and Charlotte Morton of Rockland.
