There are three vacancies on the 10-member Regional School Unit 13 Board, for the municipalities of Rockland, Thomaston and South Thomaston.

The Rockland vacancy was created by the Jan. 12 death of Board Chair Steve Roberts. At the board's Thursday night, Feb. 1, meeting, Roberts' seat at the center of the front table was left vacant, with his name tag and flowers in front of the seat.

Members also eulogized Roberts for his commitment to the community.

The Rockland City Council has been formally notified of the vacancy. Mayor Valli Geiger can offer a nomination to the full City Council to vote on to fill the vacancy. That person would serve until the general election in November.

Thomaston's vacancy was created when Kella Rivers resigned in July because of business and personal time commitments. That seat will remain vacant until the annual June town meeting, when residents will elect a successor.

In South Thomaston, Jesse Butler resigned last month, also citing business and personal time commitments. That seat will be filled at the town's annual March town meeting.

At the board's Feb. 1 meeting, members unanimously elected Nancy Jeffers of Rockland vice chair of the Board. She succeeds Loren Andrews of Cushing, who became chair upon Roberts' death.
