Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County was this year's beneficiary of one local businessman's annual donation.

Kendall Delano Jr. of Friendship has been making donations to local animal shelters for years, and on Jan. 15 he delivered a truckload of items, including dog and cat food, laundry detergent, paper towels, garbage bags and the like.

The operator of Delano's Seafood in Waldoboro said he was making this year's donation in memory of his beloved 12-year-old lab-pit bull mix, Paulie, who died two months ago from cancer.

Delano got very emotional about the loss of his longtime companion, even tearing up as he spoke.

"We are extremely grateful for the generous donation of food and supplies by Mr. Delano," said Tracy Sala, executive director of PMHSKC.

"We rely on the kindness and generosity of our community to help the animals in our care. His donation plays an important role in helping us provide the best possible care and experience for the animals while they wait for a new home," she said.

Delano keeps a donation jar on his counter at the market, which he more than matches several times a year. He uses the money to purchase various products needed at the shelters.

Last year Lincoln County Animal Shelter benefited from his generosity.
