The Midcoast Ice Cats have skated into another season and the cooperative high school ice hockey squad, which includes players from Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties, has realized early-season success.

The players represented on the team are from Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston, Belfast, Medomak Valley and Coastal Christian School of Waldoboro. Two players are homeschooled.

In the past, student-athletes from Mount View of Thorndike, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Camden Hills of Rockport, Morse of Bath, Richmond, Nokomis of Newport and Watershed School of Camden also played on the team. The roster and school vary year to year.

This year's squad, which plays home games at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport, is coached by Bill McClellan and Phil Bellows and includes seniors R.J. Botley (goalie, homeschooled), Kyle Gleba (forward, Oceanside), Elliott Spear (forward, Oceanside), Nolan Conlin (center, homeschooled), Lucas Robitaille (forward, Coastal Christian School), Alex Newcomb (forward, Belfast) and Drew Sorterup (goalie, Coastal Christian School); junior Maguire LeBlanc (defense, Oceanside); sophomores Vincent Bonarrigo (center, Belfast), Jeret Winchenbach (defense, Oceanside) and Caleb Powell (defense, Oceanside); and freshman Zachary Benner (forward, Medomak Valley).

The 'Cats play mostly high school junior varsity teams, but also other squads.

In its upcoming schedule, the team will host the Camden Hills jayvees on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 4:30 p.m., at Kents Hill on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 4:30 p.m. at the Rist & Joy Bonneford Ice Arena, at North Yarmouth Academy on Friday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m. at Travis Roy Arena, host Poland Kings on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 3:20 p.m., host Cony of Augusta on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m., host Brewer on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 4:20 p.m. (makeup from Dec. 18) and host Kents Hill on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 4:30 p.m. (makeup from Dec. 12).

The 'Cats will hold their second annual auction on Saturday, Jan. 27 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rockland Elks Lodge on upper Rankin Street in Rockland.

In Feburary, the team will play at Poland on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m., at Brewer on Friday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. and at Gardiner on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. The team also may host a tournament that month on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 20-21.

The team started play in late November.
