The Mount Desert Island basketball teams proved one step ahead of Oceanside over the weekend, as the Trojans prevailed over the Mariners in a pair of high school court games that were tight deep into the fourth quarter.

In Rockland on Friday, Jan. 5, the Trojan girls netted a 44-33 win over the Mariners, while in Bar Harbor on Saturday, Jan. 6, the Trojan boys picked up a 45-43 victory.

They were the second victories of the season by MDI over Oceanside.

Additionally, the Mariner girls were dealt a 51-31 home loss to Hermon on Monday, Jan. 8.

Girls basketball

Hermon 51, Oceanside 31

At Rockland Jan. 8, the Hawks soared past the host Mariners. Hermon led 10-3, 27-10 and 41-21 at the quarter breaks.

Abby Veilleux led Oceanside with eight points, while Hannah Moholland added seven; Raechel Joyce, five; Molly Gould and Hope Butler, three; Gabby Simmons and Kassidy Dorr, two; and Sara Dorr, one.

Lauren Plissey scored 18 points for Hermon, while Maddie Pullen added 11; Caitlynn Tracy and Grace Page, eight; Paige Plissey, five; Alex Allain, two; and Madi Curtis, one.

The Mariners were 11-of-17 (65 percent) from the foul line, while the Hawks were 10-of-14 (71 percent).

The Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (3-5, 3.0247 points) is 11th, while John Bapst (7-0, 28.9506 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Mount Desert Island 44, Oceanside 33

At Rockland Jan. 5, the Trojans broke a 33-33 tie and scored the final 11 points of the contest en route to the victory.

MDI led 8-4 after the first quarter, while the squads were tied 16-16 at halftime. MDI retook a 30-27 lead after three quarters.

Raechel Joyce scored 10 points for Oceanside, while Hope Butler added nine; Gabby Simmons, six; Sara Dorr, four; and Kassidy Robinson and Molly Gould, two.

Rachelle Swanson netted 13 points for MDI, while Maddy Candage added 11; Emily Banks, six; Maddy Good, five; Alexis Clarito and Hannah Chamberlain, three; Lily Cook, two; and Julia Watras, one.

The Mariners were 5-of-10 (50 percent) from the foul line, while the Trojans were 11-of-26 (42 percent) — including 9-of-14 (64 percent) in the fourth quarter — to help the visitors pull away from the hosts.

Boys basketball

Mount Desert Island 45, Oceanside 43

At Bar Harbor Jan. 6, the Trojans got a late 3-pointer and staved off the visiting Mariners. Oceanside led 8-4 after the first quarter, while the opponents were tied 15-15 at halftime. MDI then took a 32-28 lead after three quarters.

Cooper Wirkala keyed the Mariners with 19 points, while Trevor Reed and Mike Norton Jr. added eight; Jack Lombardo, three; Amos Anderson and Josh Peaco, two; and Jack Freeman, one.

Derrick Collin scored 13 points for the Trojans, while James McConomy added 12; Drew Shea, six; Andrew Phelps and Colby Lee, five; and Eli Parady and Owen Mild, two.

Oceanside was 12-of-14 (86 percent) from the foul line, while MDI was 4-of-7 (57 percent).

Wirkala hit a pair of foul shots to put Oceanside up one point with less than a minute to play, but the Trojans responded with a 3-pointer by McConomy with eight seconds to go in the contest, to give MDI the 45-43 lead.

Wirkala missed on a drive to the hoop in an effort to tie the game as time expired.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (5-2, 23.3333 points) is fourth, while Hermon (7-0, 31.3580 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
