A nine-day layoff did little to cool the Oceanside boys basketball team on Thursday, Dec. 28 as the Mariners hit the road to face Maranacook of Readfield in a makeup court clash.

The Mariners received double-digit scoring efforts from Cooper Wirkala, Michael Norton Jr. and Trevor Reed, all of whom helped the visitors hold off the Black Bears with a 70-67 victory.

Oceanside led 17-9 after the first quarter, 36-29 at halftime and 61-47 after three quarters.

Wirkala tossed in 22 points to lead the Mariners, while Norton added 13; Reed, 11; Jack Lombardo, nine; Josh Peaco, seven; Leo Reid, six; and Amos Anderson, two.

Wirkala also contributed seven rebounds and three assists, while Norton (8 rebounds, 3 steals), Peaco (9 rebounds) and Lombardo (9 rebounds, 3 assists) had strong statistical efforts for the visitors.

Aric Belanger scored 16 points for the Black Bears, while Silas Molar added 14; Cash McClure, nine; Bryan Riley and Mitch Root, eight; Duncan Rogers, five; Elijas Berghdal, three; and Jarred Smith and Styler Boucher, two.

The Mariners finished 21-of-30 (70 percent) from the foul line, while the Black Bears were 11-of-16 (69 percent).

Oceanside, which last defeated Camden Hills of Rockport 81-58 on Dec. 19, will play its second road game in as many days on Friday, Dec. 29 in Belfast.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (3-1, 16.2346 points) is fifth, while Presque Isle (4-1, 16.2346 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
