The new regional technical school being built on the city waterfront accounted for three-quarters of the value of construction work approved this year in Rockland.

There were also several large commercial renovations during the year. In addition, five new homes and many residential renovation permits were approved in 2017 by the city Code Enforcement Office. The value of the projects citywide totaled $28 million.

By far, the largest project permitted this year was the new Mid-Coast School of Technology. Ground was broken for the project in early October. The value of the project was $22 million.

The Code Office issued 233 building permits from Jan. 1 through Dec. 20.

Three of the other permits issued with the greatest value were for renovations to commercial properties.

The addition and renovations for Tire Warehouse, which plans to move into the Camden Street building that once housed Wendy's restaurant and later ColorTyme rentals was for $350,000.

The renovations to the space adjacent to Ocean State Job Lot for Harbor Freight Tools was for $340,000.

Renovations to Douglas Dynamics snowplow manufacturing plant on Gordon Drive was for $328,000.

The permit for renovations to the Thorndike building on Main Street for the addition of a yoga cafe is valued at $318,000.

And two permits totaling $238,000 in renovations to the 169 Camden St. building where the Social Security Office is relocating were issued.

New homes were approved for Garden Avenue, James Street, Dodge Mountain Road, Clayton Lane and Mountain View Extension. In addition to new homes, there were renovations to existing homes that exceeded the value of some of the new homes. Those residential renovations were on McLoud Street, Walker Place, Warren Street and Samoset Road.

There were also $250,000 in renovations for two residential condominium units at the Narragansett building at the intersection of Park and Union streets.

In addition to the 233 building permits, the Code Office issued 24 sign permits, three home occupation permits, 136 electrical permits, 125 plumbing permits, 25 street excavation permits and 18 sewer connection permits.
