Cold, snowy, wintry weather, no problem. At least for the 30 hardy souls who braved those conditions, plus a somewhat hilly course, to participate in the first annual "Icy Elf" 5-kilometer road race/walk on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 17.

Participants sported plenty of holiday attire, including a few Christmas sweaters in the downtown event.

Keith Drago, 30, of Rockport finished first and Daniel Bubar, 20, of Waldoboro second. Elizabeth Jones, 33, of Manchester, N.H. was the first female finisher, in fourth overall.

Barbara Daggett, 48, of Thomaston actually finished ahead of Jones but took herself out of the running for the top female award because she accidentally missed a turn on the course.

However, Daggett is listed ahead of Jones in the official results from race organizers listed below.

There also were a couple of children in the fun run: Kael Richards, 6, and Isaac Mullen, 8.

Event organizer Lucas McNelly said the "Icy Elf" event was part of the village's holiday fun festival — just with a running component.

Every year in the town, McNelly said, there has been an event where local businesses stay open later and Santa Claus shows up.

McNelly said he was asked to organize a 5K to go along with the other holiday festivities hosted by the Waldoboro Business Association in the village in and around Christmas.

McNelly said the course was different than the one used for the summertime Waldoboro Day 5K, partly because it might have snowed, which would, presumably, make that hilly course more difficult.
