Book group tonight

This evening (Thursday, Dec. 14) at 7 p.m. the Gibbs Library book group will discuss “The God of Small Things,” by Arundhati Roy. This story was awarded the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 1997. Commonly known simply as the Booker Prize, it is awarded each year for the best original novel written in the English language and published in the United Kingdom. Author Roy is a conservationist and political activist in her home country of India. Her second novel,”The Ministry of Utmost Happiness,” was recently published. “The God of Small Things” is about the childhood experiences of fraternal twins whose lives are destroyed by the "Love Laws" that dictate who should be loved. The book group is open to and welcomes everyone.

Free holiday concert

There is a free December Sing-Out from Harborside Harmony Sunday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m. at the Washington Village Church. The concert of Christmas and other seasonal music is sponsored for the public by the Washington Historical Society. Harborside Harmony is a women’s barbershop harmony chorus that has earned rave reviews at its many previous performances here. Chorus Director Kate Howell promises another lively concert with old favorites and new arrangements. There will be light refreshments following the music, with a chance to chat with the singers and others in attendance. Everyone is invited. Gather up your holiday spirit, invite your friends, relatives and guests and join us this Sunday afternoon.

Solstice observance at PCC

Palermo Community Center will celebrate the winter Solstice Sunday, Dec. 17, starting at 11 a.m. The ceremony is being held early so family Christmas events won’t conflict. (The 2017 winter Solstice is Dec. 21.) The Solstice is a meditative and healing time, as Earth turns back toward longer days. Following the ceremony, PCC will host a potluck Winter Feast in the dining room, so bring a dish to share. Eating will begin at about 1:30 p.m., and there are plug-ins for crockpots and space for dishes that need cooling or heating. The event will start with a purifying Smudge at about 10:45, so come a few minutes early. Thank you to Connie Bellet for this information. FMI, contact her at 993-2294.

How to color?

Can I just say I was flabbergasted the other day by a book in the “How-to” section of the book store. Its title – “How to Color.” I mean how to color, like in a coloring book. We can’t figure that out by ourselves? If anyone reads that book, send me your review. Really.
