A team record-setting performance — an impressive mark that stood for an astonishing 22 years — was among the highlights for Penobscot Bay YMCA Sailfish swimmers who competed in the 23rd annual Bowdoin Open senior/age-group meet Friday through Sunday, Dec. 8-10 in the LeRoy Greason Pool at Bowdoin College.

Swimmers needed to qualify for the events in the meet that was a New England USA Winter Championship with 28 teams from Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Canada.

Each swimmer was allowed to compete in three individual events and one relay per day and a total of six individual events and two relays for the weekend.

Their time of 1:53.61 broke a 22-year-old Sailfish team record, set on March 1, 1995 by Ashlee Anderson, Krysta Hathorn, Rebecca Stein and Heather Demers. The original record was 1:55.42.

Senior swimmers, those ages 13 and older, swam prelims in the morning to qualify to compete in finals at night.

Connor Hedstrom qualified for the finals in the 100 backstroke, as well as the 50 and 100 frees. Connor O'Farrell qualified for the finals in the 50 free.

Age-group swimmers, those 12 and younger, who finished among the top 10 in their events included Emma Cyr (age 12) in the 50 breaststroke (seventh) and Josie Lincoln (age 12) in the 100 butterfly (8th) and 50 fly (10th) for ages 11-12.

Rowan Stewart (age 9) finished seventh in the 50 breast, sixth in the 100 breast and 10th in 100 individual medley in the 10-and-younger age group.

The 200 medley relay of Lily Mott, Emma Cyr, Josie Lincoln and Kailin Fuller finished ninth in the 11-12 group, while the 200 FR of Emma Cyr, Kailin Fuller, Sarah Van Lonkhuyzen and Lily Mott placed seventh in the same age division. In fact, their 1:53.61 time, as stated above, broke a 22-year-old Sailfish record.
