High school ice hockey fans were treated hard crisp passing, sweet saves, hard skating and pucks in the goal as Camden Hills and Mount Ararat/Lisbon/Morse squared off in a preseason game on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Midcoast Recreation Center.

The Windjammers' opponent were the combined schools of Mount Ararat of Topsham, Lisbon of Lisbon Falls and Morse of Bath.

The Windjammers rallied in the final five minutes and nearly forced overtime, but ultimately dropped a 5-4 decision. The visitors led 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 after two periods.

Leading the Camden Hills offense were Cam Christie (2 goals), Michael Blackwell (goal), Charlie Griebel (goal), Thomas Griebel (2 assists), Quinn Brown (assist), Bryce Tyler (assist) and Colt Magri (assist).

For Mount Ararat/Lisbon/Morse, Sam Alexander (2 goals, assist), Owen Kelly (goal, assist), Nick Austin (goal), Cam Grant (goal, assist), Jacob Sargent (assist) and Cam Poisson (assist) paced the offense.

The Windjammers held a 40-29 lead in shots. Matt Czuchra made 24 saves in net for Camden Hills, while Cade Charron and Josh Demers combined to make 36 saves for Mount Ararat/Lisbon/Morse.

The Windjammers committed one minor penalty for two minutes, while the visitors committed four minor penalties for eight minutes.

"Despite the advantage in shots, we really need to defend better overall,” said veteran Camden Hills coach Karl Enroth. “Offensively we took our fair share of what could be called hope shots, but we really did not execute that well around their net to finish or through the zones to allow us to have better offensive chances.”

The Windjammers also participated in the John Bapst Holiday Faceoff Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24-25.

Camden Hills finished 0-3 during the two-day tournament, falling 6-2 to Old Town/Orono, 5-1 to Hampden Academy and 5-3 to Houlton/Hodgdon/Southern Aroostook.

"Everybody that traveled got to play during the tournament,” said coach Karl Enroth. “We took too many penalties in the Old Town/Orono and Hampden Academy games to get any offense going. Played better in the Houlton/Hodgdon/Southern Aroostook game, but too many defensive lapses and turnovers hurt us in that game.”

Additionally, Camden Hills also notched a 4-2 preseason home victory over Gardiner on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the MRC.

Christie netted three goals and Nick Tausek one for the Windjammers.

Gardiner outshot Camden Hills 38-25, including 16-6 in the first and 15-9 in the second periods.

Czuchra made 36 saves in the Camden Hills goal and Quinn Verregge 21 stops in the Tiger cage.

Camden Hills had seven minor penalties for 14 minutes and Gardiner six minor penalties for 12 minutes.

The Windjammers were 1-of-5 on the power play and Gardiner scoreless in five extra-play chances.

"Forward Cam Christie and Goalie Matt Czuchra were the difference makers in this game," said Enroth.

Gardiner had the edge in play but the score was 1-1 after the first period. The Tigers continued to carry the play, but Czuchra and Christie helped keep the Windjammers in the game, which was 2-2 heading into the third period.

The Windjammers found their skating legs and scored on a power play with just over three minutes to play to take their first lead 3-2.

Camden Hills took two penalties in the final three minutes and played the rest of the game shorthanded. Gardiner pulled its goalie in the final minute for the extra attacker and applied pressure on the Windjammer net. Christie blocked a shot from the right point and then raced down the ice to score into Gardiner's empty net for the 4-2 final score
