An enormous crowd was on hand for the annual lighting of the lobster trap tree Nov. 24 in Mildred Merrill Park in Rockland.

Santa arrived, courtesy of the Rockland Fire Department, and was joined by Mayor Valli Geiger, members of Rockland Main Street Inc., Midcoast Music Academy, 2017 Maine Lobster Festival Sea Goddess Haylie Witham, and a throng of onlookers in throwing the switch to illuminate the unique tree.

Sponsored by Camden National Bank, the event included traditional holiday songs, hot chocolate and an opportunity for family memories around the Midcoast icon — composed of 154 traps, 125 buoys, 480 feet of garland entwined with twinkle lights, and a plethora of zip ties.

Festivities continue Saturday, Nov. 25, including visits with Santa, horse-drawn wagon rides, judging of storefront decorations along Main Street at 4:30, and the Parade of Lights at 6 p.m.
