The third annual Nathan Mitchell/William “Billy” Stinson Jr. Memorial Alumni Basketball Games, a precursor for Thanksgiving, again will fill that role for Midcoast residents on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at Oceanside Middle School — formerly Georges Valley High School.

For decades, separate alumni basketball games — the Mitchell and Stinson Games — took place for Georges Valley High School and Rockland District High School, respectively.

With the schools combining a few years ago to form Oceanside High School, so too did the organizers of the alumni games to form a collaborative fundraising effort for OHS — and to remember the lives of a soon-to-have-been Buccaneer and a Tiger.

Nathan Mitchell was a student-athlete in then Maine School Administrative District 50, which included Thomaston, St. George and Cushing. Mitchell died in 2002 at age 15 of brain cancer.

Stinson was a three-sport RDHS Tiger student-athlete who died in a drunk driving accident on Oct. 30, 1993.

The Stinson Games were held 21 years, 1993 to 2014, while the Mitchell Games were held 2002 to 2014, though those games were not held in 2011 or 2013.

Proceeds from the basketball event will go to Oceanside High School graduates in the form of scholarships.

On Nov. 22, two games, instead of the originally scheduled three, will be played, which will pit RDHS and GVHS graduates against each other — with a smattering of recent OHS graduates also in the mix on either side.

The women's game will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the men's contest at 7 p.m.

Oceanside graduates also are eligible to play. Graduates/former players from the Rockland, Owls Head, South Thomaston and Spruce Head (the old Maine School Administrative District 5) will be assigned to Rockland teams, while players from Thomaston, Cushing and St. George/Tenants Harbor (the old MSAD 50) will be assigned to Georges Valley teams.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children.
