A man is being held at the Knox County Jail on charges that he tried to strangle a woman and threatened to kill her.

Justice Daniel Billings set bail at $5,000 cash for 32-year-old Michael Beardsley, of Union, during a brief hearing Monday, Nov. 20, in Knox County Unified Court.

Beardsley is charged with felony domestic violence aggravated assault, and misdemeanor charges of domestic violence terrorizing, and terrorizing.

According to an affidavit filed by the Knox County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called Friday, Nov. 17, shortly after 9 p.m. to a residence in Union by Beardsley, who claimed a woman had been drinking and was trying to drive away from the home.

When officers arrived, the alleged victim said that Beardsley had thrown her to the floor and put his hands around her neck and tried to strangle her. She said she couldn't breathe and thought he was going to kill her.

Another woman at the residence said she witnessed the assault. Deputies reported that the woman had red marks around her throat.

A deputy also reported hearing Beardsley say loudly to his mother that he wanted to get a gun and shoot the alleged assault victim.

Beardsley told deputies that he had not assaulted her, but that the woman had struck him first.
