Half-acre burned in Mount Battie fire

Discarded smoking materials are thought to have started an Aug. 4 fire that burned a half-acre on Mount Battie.

A fire ranger responded to the scene, located about 1,000 feet in the woods from the Megunticook Street trailhead, shortly before 6 p.m.

The hikers who discovered the blaze initially tried to put the fire out, but called the Public Safety Building after realizing it was burning too big an area, Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley said.

Farley said although weather conditions have been foggy during the last week, the ground is still fairly dry and there are a lot of dry leaves on the ground in that area of the trail. He also noted there are province-wide fire bans in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
